Light has always been crucial in defining architectural volumes and in the management of functions that need to take place within them. It is not only a question of aesthetics, but is above all a matter of ‘perception’ not only of the spaces but also of the very quality of the light itself.   The latter is always changing depending on the functions that take place in an environment: Sometimes it is “symbiotic” imposing itself as something independent (the luminaire) appearing as an independent sculpture, at other times it is anonymous by hiding and lowering its intensity.

In designing exterior architecture but especially the interior of buildings. I have always striven to give great importance to artificial light according to the concepts just expressed.  Just as important to me has been natural daylight in accentuating or diminishing an architectural environment.

In this way the various “lamps” or lighting systems which have served to resolve the problems face by each individual project, have been born.

The ‘Wissel 8’ for example was intended as a Calderiano-style sculpture, successfully solving a technical problem and a design requirement: to render a warm and welcoming the LED light that would be emitted to illuminate the diners who would find themselves around a table dining. The use of steel coated with gold leaf mounted by hand according to an ancient tradition has solved the problem by reflecting downwards the strong white LED light that was emitted from the illuminating body underneath. Gold has often been used in a decorative manner by many designers of lamps, but in this case the decoration is secondary to the functional requirements.

On the other hand, the intention of the ’Wissel 4′ is to keep the white light of LED lamps, which, however, is filtered by opaque plexiglass sheets and then reflected onto opposite areas of the environment in order to give the impression that these had their “own light”

In many other cases, led strips are hid in false ceilings, under steps, behind a mirror or a cut in the wall and in turn they themselves become architecture, highlighting gaps that relate to the environment or highlighting volumes which that characterise the environment.

 La luce è sempre stata fondamentale nella definizione dei volumi architettonici e nella gestione delle funzioni che si devono svolgere all’interno di essi. Non è solo una problematica estetica, è soprattutto una questione di ‘percezione’ non solo degli spazi ma anche della qualità stessa della luce. Essa è sempre mutevole in relazione delle funzioni che si svolgono in un ambiente: talvolta è ‘dialogante’ nel senso che si impone come oggetto autonomo (il corpo illuminante) mostrandosi come una scultura indipendente; altre volte invece si rende anonima nascondendosi e abbassando la sua intensità.

Nel disegnare l’architettura esterna ma soprattutto quella interna degli edifici, mi sono sempre imposto di dare molta importanza alla luce artificiale secondo questi concetti appena espressi, non meno dell’importanza che per me ha sempre avuto la luce naturale diurna nel qualificare o squalificare un ambiente architettonico.

Nel corso degli anni a questo scopo sono nate delle ‘lampade’ o dei sistemi illuminanti che potessero risolvere le singole problematiche di ogni progetto.

La ‘Wissel 8’ per esempio doveva essere una scultura di gusto Calderiano che, mostrandosi, risolvesse un problema tecnico e un desiderio progettuale: rendere calda ed accogliente la luce led che sarebbe stata emessa per illuminare i commensali che si sarebbero ritrovati intorno ad un tavolo da pranzo.  L’uso dell’acciaio rivestito di foglie d’oro montate artigianalmente secondo la tradizione antica ha risolto il problema riflettendo verso il basso la forte e bianca luce led che veniva emessa dal corpo illuminante sottostante. L’oro è stato spesso usato in maniera decorativa da molti progettisti di lampade, ma in questo caso la decorazione è passata in secondo piano rispetto alle esigenze funzionali.

Al contrario la ‘Wissel 4’ vuole invece conservare la luce bianca delle lampade led, ma questa viene filtrata da lastre di plexiglass opache e poi riflessa su porzioni di ambienti opposti che dovevano dare l’impressione di emettere ‘luce propria’.

In molti altri casi le strisce led si nascondono nei controsoffitti, sotto i gradini, dietro uno specchio, in un taglio nel muro e di volta in volta diventano esse stesse architettura, evidenziando spazi vuoti che si relazionano con l’ambiente o evidenziano volumi ed elementi che lo caratterizzano.

Nowadays the use of images to define and characterise architectural spaces is widespread, especially in temporary, trade-fair and sport-related architecture etc.  From the start of digital photography and above all over the last ten years, the techniques for reproducing and above all for printing photographs have advanced to such a degree that nowadays it is possible to reproduce prints of any size and on any material.   Digital printing can thus be done on glass, wood, metal and any other material imaginable, something which was inconceivable only a few years ago.  The situation becomes even more interesting when a photographic project is fused with an interior design one.  Three metre high letters and highly creative “snaps”, if taken out of their usual commercial or office context, and used carefully in a domestic context, have a highly evocative power which we can harness to obtain the objectives which we desire.

I’d like to use as an example, an “open Space’ project of mine.  For this, I was required to integrate the sleeping area with the open-plan kitchen and sitting room.  I took the decision to print a series of images, taken in roman art museums, onto a single seven metre long canvas and carefully fuse them to create a single global image. The decision was essential to achieve an incisive transformation of the space and to define it.  The photograph, with its long horizontal aspect and its strong colours, provided character to a section of the space which initially lacked atmosphere and it also served to accentuate the surrounding areas and draw attention to the particularly elaborate suspended ceilings.

L’uso della fotografia in architettura

 È ormai una pratica abbastanza diffusa, soprattutto nelle architetture temporanee, fieristiche, sportive ecc., utilizzare le immagini fotografiche per definire e caratterizzare volumi architettonici. Dall’avvento del digitale e soprattutto negli ultimi dieci anni le tecniche di riproduzione e soprattutto di stampa fotografica si sono talmente affinate da permettere la realizzazione di immagini di qualunque dimensione stampate su supporti di ogni genere. La stampa digitalizzata la si usa su vetro, legno, metallo e altri materiali impensabili fino a qualche tempo fa. Tutto ciò diventa particolarmente interessante quando un progetto fotografico è pensato in un interno. Credo che la forza delle immagini possa spesso integrarsi col disegno architettonico di un interno privato. Scritte alte tre metri o ‘scatti’ fotografici particolarmente creativi se li tiriamo fuori da negozi, uffici e centri commerciali e li adeguiamo con i dovuti accorgimenti di un progetto ad un interno privato, la loro forza evocativa aumenta e noi possiamo strumentalizzarla in base ai risultati che vogliamo ottenere. Vorrei riportare come esempio il caso in cui disegnando un ‘open space’ avevo la necessità di unire in un progetto di interni le aree private che si integravano con il soggiorno e la cucina. La scelta di stampare su un unico supporto di tela lungo sette metri una successione di immagini scattate nei musei di arte romana ed opportunamente elaborate nel definire un’unica immagine globale, ha determinato un’incisiva trasformazione dello spazio caratterizzando e definendolo. L’elemento fotografico che ha un taglio fortemente longitudinale con i suoi colori forti ha dato carattere ad una parte dello spazio che inizialmente sembrava inespressivo e inoltre ha evidenziato i volumi che lo circondano dando forza al disegno dei controsoffitti particolarmente elaborato.

I would now like to post an article on the important role which art has played both in my personal, and above all, in my professional life.

I would like this to be a very personal account.  Although professional websites don’t normally call for articles of this nature, talking about oneself sometimes allows for a better understanding of what inspires a person..

I began painting at the very early age of seven, long before I began to study architecture. From the outset I was aware that I was learning a language which would be of use not only for relating to people but also in my future professional life.

Recently, after having completed the refurbishment of the Antwerp office I came across a work of mine, in a basement storage, which I had painted in 1978, at the age of 19 and which, after nearly 40 years, was still in good condition.  On the back of the painting was the inscription “no title”, a homage to various avant-garde movements which I was then, as now, particularly passionate about.

Different hues of purple black and red overlap over different surfaces: canvas and three sheets of glass.  I immediately saw the connection between the painting and the project which I had just completed.  A cohesion both in terms of intent as well as in the final intense aesthetics. Was this a pure coincidence or an unchanging balance in the choice of certain colours and materials? One thing is certain, in that there is definitely a continuity in one’s creativity which is quite independent from the different objectives of each painting.

Over the years, various strange things have happened which, artistically, have led me to different results.  At this point, however, I would like to briefly discuss another recent work which sums up my approach to art.  It is called “Contrappunto su Rothko”.  This work, on the one hand, reflects my enormous passion for the great masters, and I humbly pay homage to them in my own work, on the other, hand, however, I never attempt to copy but merely be inspired and bring my own personal expression to my paintings.

However, for all that artistic and architectural projects can have a certain degree of similarity, art allows for a freedom of expression which an architectural project cannot, due to the restrictions, especially in terms of functionality which is demanded of it.  A work of art is processed through observation, architecture meanwhile, and above all, by living in it.

Su Rothko

 Stavolta vorrei postare un articolo sull’importanza che la pittura ha svolto nella mia vita e soprattutto nel mio lavoro.

Vorrei che sia un articolo molto personale, anche se un sito professionale non lo richiede; a volte raccontare di sé può far comprendere meglio le proprie scelte.

Ho cominciato a dipingere molto prima di studiare architettura: avevo solo 7 anni. Dal principio ho avuto l’impressione che stavo per apprendere un linguaggio che mi avrebbe aiutato nel relazionarmi non solo con le persone, ma soprattutto con ciò di cui mi sarei occupato.

Recentemente dopo aver ultimato la realizzazione del progetto di ristrutturazione dello studio di Anversa ho ritrovato, in cantina ben conservato, dopo quasi quarant’anni, un lavoro eseguito nel 1978 quando avevo 19 anni che riportava sul retro la dicitura ‘senza titolo’ in omaggio a certe avanguardie storiche che allora, come adesso, mi appassionano particolarmente.

Campi cromatici in viola nero e rosso stesi su piani diversi sovrapposti: una tela e tre lastre di vetro. Ho immediatamente collegato quel lavoro al progetto degli interni appena finito e vi ho trovato una similitudine di intenti oltre che di risultati estetici particolarmente intensa. Pura coincidenza o immutabile equilibrio nella scelta di certi materiali e colori? Di certo capisco che esiste una linea di continuità nelle espressioni creative che è indipendente dagli scopi che ogni singola creazione insegue.

Nel corso degli anni si sono succedute diverse curiosità che pittoricamente mi hanno portato a risultati differenti, ma qui voglio spendere ancora qualche parola per parlare di un’altra opera recente che sintetizza il mio approccio verso la pittura: si chiama ‘Contrappunto su Rothko’. In questo lavoro da un lato ritrovo una mia certa passione nell’ammirare l’opera di grandi maestri pensando ad un umile omaggio nei loro confronti, dall’altro vedo un punto di partenza verso progetti pittorici personali. Ma, per quanto progetti architettonici e progetti pittorici possano dialogare tra di loro, la pittura arriva a libertà espressive che un progetto architettonico non può raggiungere per quei giusti vincoli, soprattutto funzionali, che lo caratterizzano. Un’opera pittorica si assimila osservandola, l’architettura anche e soprattutto vivendoci dentro.

My new studio in Antwerp is located in Wisselstraat 8 in a side street of the central Grote Mark on the second floor of a 1970s building.  Outwardly the building has tried to ‘blend-in’ with the surrounding old buildings by incorporating  the aesthetics of the their facades and their use of materials. Antwerp is a city where the programming and management of spatial and architectural events is very important and the relationship between the old town and new modern areas is managed by the planners through a direct and continuous relationship with the designers. Having acquired Belgian nationality and having a long-standing affection for this city, my Antwerp studio is a new point of reference for my forthcoming projects.

The rehabilitation of the interior has combined two adjacent housing units by opening and structurally consolidating their party wall, then replacing it with a door-cum-wall that interrupts the unity or the separateness of the space depending on how it is used over time. The arrangement of the seating or the different work areas are studied in relation to the movement of daylight and especially for the view of the bell tower of the old Gothic cathedral and the buildings that face onto the Grote Mark. The interiors, wall coverings, furniture and light fittings whilst all custom-made, also incorporate design elements from the great masters of the 20th century.

 Il mio nuovo studio ad Anversa è collocato in Wisselstraat 8 in una traversa della centrale Grote Mark al secondo piano di un edificio degli anni 70 che esteriormente ha tentato di ‘ricucire’ il rapporto con i vecchi edifici circostanti riprendendo l’estetica delle facciate e l’uso dei materiali. Anversa è una città dove la programmazione e la gestione degli eventi territoriali ed architettonici è molto importante e il rapporto tra città antica e nuove aree moderne è gestito dagli amministratori attraverso un rapporto diretto e continuo con i progettisti. Avendo acquisito la cittadinanza Belga e legato da un antico affetto a questa città, lo studio di Anversa si pone come un punto di riferimento per i miei nuovi progetti.

Il riadattamento degli interni ha unito due moduli abitativi contigui aprendo e consolidando strutturalmente la loro parete di unione, sostituendola poi con una porta-parete che interferisce nell’unità o nella discontinuità dello spazio in base a come questo viene utilizzato di volta in volta. La disposizione delle sedute o delle diverse aree di lavoro sono studiate in relazione ai movimenti della luce diurna e soprattutto alla vista sul campanile della cattedrale gotica e degli edifici che prospettano su Grote Mark. Gli arredi, pareti attrezzate, mobili su misura, lampade, sono progettati in maniera specifica; in parte però vengano anche utilizzati elementi del design dei grandi maestri del ‘900.
