My new studio in Antwerp is located in Wisselstraat 8 in a side street of the central Grote Mark on the second floor of a 1970s building. Outwardly the building has tried to ‘blend-in’ with the surrounding old buildings by incorporating the aesthetics of the their facades and their use of materials. Antwerp is a city where the programming and management of spatial and architectural events is very important and the relationship between the old town and new modern areas is managed by the planners through a direct and continuous relationship with the designers. Having acquired Belgian nationality and having a long-standing affection for this city, my Antwerp studio is a new point of reference for my forthcoming projects.
The rehabilitation of the interior has combined two adjacent housing units by opening and structurally consolidating their party wall, then replacing it with a door-cum-wall that interrupts the unity or the separateness of the space depending on how it is used over time. The arrangement of the seating or the different work areas are studied in relation to the movement of daylight and especially for the view of the bell tower of the old Gothic cathedral and the buildings that face onto the Grote Mark. The interiors, wall coverings, furniture and light fittings whilst all custom-made, also incorporate design elements from the great masters of the 20th century.

Il mio nuovo studio ad Anversa è collocato in Wisselstraat 8 in una traversa della centrale Grote Mark al secondo piano di un edificio degli anni 70 che esteriormente ha tentato di ‘ricucire’ il rapporto con i vecchi edifici circostanti riprendendo l’estetica delle facciate e l’uso dei materiali. Anversa è una città dove la programmazione e la gestione degli eventi territoriali ed architettonici è molto importante e il rapporto tra città antica e nuove aree moderne è gestito dagli amministratori attraverso un rapporto diretto e continuo con i progettisti. Avendo acquisito la cittadinanza Belga e legato da un antico affetto a questa città, lo studio di Anversa si pone come un punto di riferimento per i miei nuovi progetti.
Il riadattamento degli interni ha unito due moduli abitativi contigui aprendo e consolidando strutturalmente la loro parete di unione, sostituendola poi con una porta-parete che interferisce nell’unità o nella discontinuità dello spazio in base a come questo viene utilizzato di volta in volta. La disposizione delle sedute o delle diverse aree di lavoro sono studiate in relazione ai movimenti della luce diurna e soprattutto alla vista sul campanile della cattedrale gotica e degli edifici che prospettano su Grote Mark. Gli arredi, pareti attrezzate, mobili su misura, lampade, sono progettati in maniera specifica; in parte però vengano anche utilizzati elementi del design dei grandi maestri del ‘900.
It has a pleasant Mediterranean taste (in the colors, shapes and combinations) but the design’s strict accuracy is typically Nordic. Nice project!
I’m not a big fan of inserting antiques in a modern context but in this particular case the combination is very well- balanced
I would have stuck to more sober colors given the redundancy of the forms but the project is quite interesting
Love the work your have done with the dropped ceilings and sliding doors as well as the integration of your partner’s visual arts interests.
I like to think a studio has to be as comfortable as your own hous and by the way our work nowadays is not just building sites but also software using and meetings with people. The old drawing table is just a distant memory
